Yeah those 10% more...  Currently I have 5 55mm lenses (Nikkor 55mm f1.2, Canon FL 55mm f1.2, ultra micro Nikkor 55mm f2, micro Nikkor Auto 55mm f3.5, Auto Reflecta (Tomioka) 55mm f1.4. And I had a micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8 for a while). Time to get a real 50mm perhaps?  Big Grin

The Ultra-Micro Nikkor sounds badass enough. But you should not force your own hand - after 55mm, 50mm might seem like a fisheye.  Tongue

I was considering this lens to use on APS-c as portrait lens however the  main issue with the old lens was frequent focus errors making it practically unusable  for portraits mainly at  f1.8  that's why I shifted for the 1.4 sister which is absolutely wonderful, one if the best I have ever used except for focus motor reliabilty, Till now I changed the micromotor twice in six  years... 150$ each time, that's why I was considering switch, how did you find focus accuracy mainly on moving objects ??

Hi Toni,

 

I didn't run into focusing issues so far but I am not so sure about focus tracking. 

I am actually going to test the lens on the EOS 7D II which supports STM in full so thereafter I might have a better idea about tracking.

Another one of those "by the way..." questions Klaus... why did you opt for the 20MP 7D Mark II instead of the 24MP 760D for the next resolution boost in the Canon land?

Klaus decided on the 7D mk II when it was introduced. The 750D/760D were not yet announced.  B)

Guess I need this lens after all...

Yesterday the wife asked me to make a portrait of her - totally off the cuff, and all I had on hand were her 650D + 18-135 STM (a great lens btw!) and the 50/1.8 II. The latter could not focus to save its life in Live View (I had to use LV because the wife told me what she had in mind, and that demanded VERY odd angle, far too unsuitable to use the viewfinder) and I was afrait it was going to fall to pieces. In the end I just gave up, jacked the ISO up one stop and switched to the 18-135. Focused like a charm. Guess the 50/1.8 STM would've done the same.

I guess you mean AF in live view? Just switch to MF and do it manually.

MFing with the 50/1.8 II is not a pleasant experience in any case, and more so when you're holding the camera in an outstretched hand above the head (while standing on a chair), using live view on an articulated screen. It was also hunting like hell where the STM nailed it without fuss. Guess I'm a sucker for comfort. Big Grin
