While very affordable I'm somewhat confused why they released a lens that is directly competing against the Oly 17mm /1.8.

Confused? 17mm is a 35mm FF equivalent. So, a rather standard and useful FOV. Which makes sense. f1.8 sounds fast on MFT, while being cheap and easy, so that makes sense too. And then a price that is about 1/3rd of the Oly... Makes sense.
Would you be confused if a 3rd party manufacturer offered a 35mm lens for an FF platform?
