RAW converters am I missing something? - toni-a - 12-25-2016 Have been regularly following development of RAW converters, downloading every now and then trial versions. Noticed some that were rather basic have evolved tremendously like Canon DPP, although it's a free software it is being well developed only thing to complain about is the pointless absence of backward compatibility, why DPP4 doesn't accept old cameras ? why fill light doesn't work on 5D files while it works on 50D files ? Does anyone believe this will drive people to buy new cameras ??? Other RAW converters have always been excellent and are still at the race like ACR and DXO. however my disappointment came from silkypics, once my favorite and after so many versions, almost nothing has changed, although it is bundled with many camera systems it does seem to need some work to be at the level of the competition, too bad they seem left behind, do you think the "made in japan" label is enough for being competitive ? RAW converters am I missing something? - Brightcolours - 12-25-2016 DPP 4 has been developed new, it was not a simple update to DPP 3. In the beginning it only could convert RAW files from the newest FF bodies, now they have added support for every body and even a number of compacts which offer a version of RAW with features that DPP 4 uses. Cameras older then the ones that offer picture styles (not saying it is the picture styles that DPP 4 needs, just saying that that is the line in the sand which we can easily distinguish) will not be supported simply because the RAW files have evolved over time, and DPP 4 uses things those cameras lack. DPP 3 still is supported for Mac OS and Windows. I see no reason to every once in a while come with the same complaint/question, though? What I find sad is that RPP (a bare bones Mac OS only converter which specialised in better conversions regarding noise and sharpness with the use of better computation) seems to have stopped development. As fas as I know it is a one guy development, and such things happen. RAW converters am I missing something? - toni-a - 12-25-2016 my 30D and 5D both have picture styles, still not supported... but that's not a problem since for the purpose I use them DPP3 is just enough, I was surprised however with silkypics, some manufacturers are using as their own RAW converter, it is lacking behind competition when it comes to feathures RAW converters am I missing something? - Brightcolours - 12-25-2016 Quote:my 30D and 5D both have picture styles, still not supported...Then I am mistaken about when the features that DPP uses appeared, it must not have been just after the picture style feature. It is around the time lens correction profiles were added (the 30D and 5D were introduced before that, they got support for it in a later firmware update). Silkypix has always been about conversion, not other features. That is just a different philosophy, like RPP and others. RAW converters am I missing something? - toni-a - 12-26-2016 Well I did find a positive point for silkypix: speed, it is the fastest doing batch job RAW converters am I missing something? - Brightcolours - 01-13-2017 Hai Tony, you might be happy to hear that Canon has again expanded the list of cameras DPP4 now supports. Canon seems to do listen to its customers, of course this is a part of the recipe for the success downloading RAW converters am I missing something? - toni-a - 01-14-2017 tried it, quite good. However auto lighting optimizer doesn't work on older bodies, it didn't work in DPP3 anyway on 5D files but worked well on 7D files. will see if it renders skin tones amazingly good as did DPP3 |
