Next PZ lens test report: Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8 G
#1
Another surprise <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Most lenses so far struggled quite a bit on the D7000 towards the borders, the AF-S 85/1.8 G however keeps the performance on the same high level as on FX.

Nice.

Interesting that the 1.8D also performed well on D7000 - incl.borders from f/2.8 - with roughly equivalent resolution from f/5.6 + bit better CAs...

Thanks for this review !(and for many others)

This lens is on my wish list :-) (replacing the 1.8D which I thought of before, and did not take due to bookeh)

One thing I would like to ask is, the comment that this lens is not suitable as portrait for 7K.

I think of it for using as portrait of face + shoulder.

is it because the "relative" focal length ? meaning the perspective due to distance needed is too much ?

thanks

I really started to think that this piece of glass will be more appreciated than the D800 among Nikon users <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />... I think my new D800 will not come naked, but with a 85mm on it... The old 85mm 1.8S did it's job, and it's time to retire...

Actually what Nikon did with the recent F/1.8G lenses is amazing. I've bought the 50mm F/1.8G last week... First impression was "it looks like a toy", but soon after using it I'm amazed... I hope this 85mm would be even better...

It is suited for portrait usage on APS-C. I think you must have misunderstood.

The lens is perfectly fine for portraiture on the D7000. What comment do you refer to, maybe I wasn't clear enough?

Re the 'purple fringing' issue, I think the shot taken at f/1.8, with the single wooden post and green wire fence, is showing this: follow the horizontal wire set against a white background along from the post to the right. Here, the fence wire seems to be the same width as the 'fringing' artefact.

Markus: is the 50/1.4G review on D7000 coming soon? It'll be interesting to see whether that lens also maintains its' border / extreme resolution on D7000.

Good find, but I think this is simply "regular" bokeh fringing. The wire slowly runs out of focus towards the right border. Closer to the wooden post, you can find wire sections that are almost perfectly in focus and show only very small traces of fringing.

However, I've often wondered if the large amount of PF often seen in sample images with fast primes (not only the AF-D 85) is basically only Bokeh fringing, resulting from using the lenses wide open on unsuitable subjects. The DOF with such a fast lens is very thin, any high contrast subject not perfectly in focus will show purple or green fringing. And most real-world subjects usually don't fit well into the focal plane of a fast lens used wide open.

I'll see what I can do. Maybe a few zooms first, maybe some primes. Or a mix of both, depends on my mood <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> In any case: next review to be published will be the Sigma 17-70 OS.

Anyone interested in another sneak preview? AF-D 180/2.8 maybe?

Yes, certainly! I haven't high hopes in terms of resolution, had it myself and after it the Sigma 150/2.8 which was vastly superior in terms of contrast. But the 180mm Nikkor had its own character and was great for portraits!

BTW, I wouldn't mind sneak previewing the AF-S 105/2.8 VR also <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />
