I was invited to take part in one of Canon's internet polls a while back (2 1/2 years ago?), as a CPS member. They were clearly trying to establish what direction to take, higher MP, better high iso, better IQ overall, etc. There were also several questions regarding video. What we see happening now may well be the culmination of the results of that research, plus of course their own ideas.
What I found interesting is that there was ample space to expand on the reasons why one selected a specific answer. I reckon nobody really wanted to go back in resolution, but still wanted the best high iso performance possible, as well as a better AF spec, hence the 1Dx, and possibly the new Cinema EOS system and lenses. I would expect there to be a high MP camera as well at some stage, for the landscape and studio shooters amongst us, probably the fabled "3D" or something similar, whatever it will be called, so still at a premium compared to the 5D II, maybe followed by a cheaper version, Ã la 5D II, with either a similar high MP sensor, or one somewhere in between "3D" and 1Dx.
My guestimates for the landscape/studio camera would be in the order of 39 MP, as Canon seems to use pixel sizes one generation back compared to APS-C cameras for their next high MP FF cameras (hence 15 MP APS-C extended to FF, which makes for 39.1 MP), and maybe a 26.5 to 32 MP camera (2 to 3 generations back in APS-C pixel size) as a step in between, a 5D Mk III or 6D, for the enthousiast amateur market.
