Yes, i think that. Several reasons:
1. The D3(s) uses a Nikon sensor. The D3x uses a Sony sensor.
2. The still rumoured D800 uses a Sony sensor.
3. The D800 is positioned to compete with the very successful 5D mk II. Not a fast sports/PJ camera.
4. Canon found that with a 5D mk II, the expensive pro model 1Ds mk III did not sell well.
From all this follows:
The 36mp sensor is a Sony one. Nikon will be working on a follow up to the D3 sensor. It will need to be lower in resolution for 2 reasons at least: Nikon can't afford to make a 4D follow up with worse high ISO performance than the D3. And 36mp 14 bits needs too much processing power to make the camera do 10 fps. So, I expect a Nikon designed sensor of about 18mp (similar to the 1D X), in a camera with build in battery grip and ruggedness we are used to from the D3(s), built for the professional who needs speed and rugged build quality.
And the D800 will cater for the same audience as the 5D mk II does and the 5D mk III will do. Whether Nikon will then still come with a D4x, we shall see. Not really necessary.
With Canon, the 1D-X loses the 1.3x crop advantage the 1D mk IV still had (tele advantage, edge quality advantage). It hits Canon shooters harder, to blend the 1D and 1Ds, that it does with Nikon and the D3 and D3x.
