Looks like I belong to the wrong target market....

I think the same here... OTOH I still have questions in mind about the product placement in the market. D3s and D3x were making sense that they were professional bodies primarly aiming the studio work (although D3x is too big) and D3s aims for the sports/action photography. We have D700 as a semi-pro body for the amateurs who would like to experince FF sensor in digital photography. Now if a D800 with 36mp FF sensor comes into play, it definitely means that the rules will be changed in a rather odd way (assuming that it will not be affordable for amateurs)... I believe that Dx product family will not cancelled, nor they will use the same 36mp sensor... Otherwise, this would be another D3 vs. D700 disaster...

There was no "D3xs" because D3s had a great performance in terms of speed and high ISO, and D3x also had a decent high ISO performance, although it was aimed for the high resolution seeking professionals. Yes it is bulky, but in the end it's a personal matter. And both functionalities in the same package was not (and maybe is still not) possible at that time. That's why we did not have the D3xs...

This year Canon announced 1D-X with 18mp FF sensor -and apart from leaving the 1.3 crop behind-, it is obvious what it is the target group. But this does not neccessarily mean that the Nikon flagship should have less resolution than before with brilliant ISO performance and FPS to compete, and the high-res FX role should be taken over by the Dxxx product family.

Sadly, I'm afraid Nikon will loose amateur FX users, assuming that the 36mp D800 will not have a reasonable price tag. And from that point of view, most probably they will not be able to compete with the future 5D-III, which brings out the point again that D800 with that much resolution and price tag is not a good move.
