I saw this: http://whitemetal.com/pentax/ap_ab_ii/index.htm

And they're not that expensive to buy, so I'm considering it for digitizing a lot of old pictures that my family has. I've been supposed to do this for a long time, but I have no scanner. This seems faster and easier, but I have no experience doing this.

How is this compared to scanning with a quality scanner? I know the resolution will be limited to my camera (Pentax K-5), but that's enough for me. Any ideas or experience to share about this?

I was thinking I could use the Sigma 105mm macro for this as it's a very sharp lens and can focus to 1:1.

I've been pondering this issue myself for a long time. I have an old Canon FD macro bellows (now I use Canon EOS), so I could have bought the matching slide adapter and an ef to fd adapter and I do have an old macro lens.

However, I have also a EF-S 60mm macro lens. So, I thought how can I use that. In the end I used something like this

You can buy these Miranda/Accura/Panagor slide holders from ebay - the ones without glass.

In addition, I bought a 52 mm diameter set of 50 mm long extension tubes, and a 52 to 46 step-down ring that goes into one of the series 7 rings that should come with the slide holder. So, the whole thing now just screws into the front of the macro lens. The slide holder has about 20mm back/forth adjustment to get magnification right, and it also can rotate around the axis to get it horizontal. It takes slides of many thicknesses.

It seems to work quite well, with AF and automatic exposure. I set it to something like f6 for a bit of DOF and reduced vignetting.

The nice thing is that I can hand-hold this contraption even with long shutter speeds - you just don't get hand-shake... So pretty much any light source will work, the automatic exposure takes care of it.

The resolution with a 400D body is better than what I can get with the epson flatbed scanner with slide attachment (no matter how much I increase the resolution for the scanning, only file size increases, but not sharpness of the slide). And the camera is of course faster than the scanner.

I haven't tried it in large scale yet.

Here another one
