About time machine: Imagine a full crash of your boot drive. With a bootable clone you can simply reboot from your backup drive to continue working. With time machine this is not possible without additional hardware.[/quote]

What additional hardware?

Moreover, and even more serious, time machine does AFAIK not backup everything. E.g. when you re-install software like Adobe PS via time machine you need to register again (in other words certain settings and registration informations are NOT saved by time machine).

That's not true. Time Machine indeed does not backup everything, but what's left out is stuff that's not important anyway (like temp files). As I have already mentioned, CS5 runs like it did before after a restore. Even if the restore did not happen on the same machine (that's how I transferred over from the MacBook Pro to the Air). Technically it's no difference if a file is saved and restored by SuperDuper or Time Machine.

Now imagine you discover you have accidently saved a new file under an old name, overwriting valuable information. If you discover this after your latest clone copy job, you're out of luck. If you used Time Machine instead, you have access to older versions TM has saved for you. In addition, TM works right from within Apps that support it.

A clone copy no doubt can make sense as an additional level of protection. But I don't see it as a full replacement alternative to TM. TM can do way more than SuperDuper or CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). And while we're at it: you don't even need such tools to create a clone of the boot drive, the Disk Utility already can do this. The tools however give additional options, like scheduled runs or incremental updates.
