The focal length shrinkage is pretty noticeable on the 70-300L. So when close focusing, you're not as close as you might hope to be as it were.

 

As another question for the 100-400 II: if you focus on something at one focal length, change to another focal length, does the focus remain at the same distance?

 

I haven't gone back and compared the I and II reviews here yet, but Lensrentals have also done a quick test at 400mm. In short, new one about same in centre, better off centre.
