Well, after having tried them all (80-400 AF-S, 70-200/2.8 VR II and 70-300 VR), I went with the 70-300mm. Until 200mm there is not much between any of those lenses. At 300mm, I see a difference at f/5.6. But the 70-300 is very good for me at 300mm at f/11, which is fine for landscapes on a tripod.
From what I saw, the 70-300 gives me 90% of what the 80-400 would give me at 20% of the price and half the weight.
