17 is the new 23? The Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8 also has 17 elements.

You can see it in the specs, your 1st gen f2.8 IS reaches 0.17x at 1.4m, the RF reaches 0.23x at 0.7m (half the distance). half the distance should have given 0.17 x 2 = 0.34x magnification, of the lenses behaved the same.

Thanx. The 1st gen. EF was not outright bad for closeups, although they did improve MFD with the newer iterations. I remember using extension tubes on it too (until one snapped in half while I was shooting, and the lens tumbled to the ground... I must've had my entire life pass before my sight in that instant).
