I have a D800 and regularly use 1.2, 5.4 and DX crop modes. Apart from being able to compose better, it also saves in file size.
And apart from that in DX crop mode you can get an extra frame per second.
In fact I would perfer the 4:3 ratio over the 5:4 since I like to print 40x30 cm and it is one of the default sizes from the lab that I use.
I also seen somewhere that when you are in the crop mode, the 51 Af point will amost cover all the frame. So that could be a good thing for the tracking in sport.
