In the past I never bothered with uv filters nor hoods.
But recently on holidays I put a uv filter on my 16-35mm f4 lens which is not exactly cheap.
When I got home I found that the lens had taken a hit and the damage was on the rim of the filter. Luckily it came off with no damage to the lens.
So now either a uv filter or a hood is on all my good lenses.
Apart from the protection that you get from a filter, I have no problems being a bit rough when cleaning them. Wth some lenses even a slight rub can leave a permanent mark. It might make no difference to the picture quality but it sure is annoying to look at a lens with a rub mark. With a uv filter I can just buy another one.
