Just listing factors generally contributing to the costs of making a product does not provide insights into the calculations of MILC makers like Pana and Oly. Nor does it represent a "fuller" understanding of these calculations. I tried to find some information on how profitable their MILC business actually is, but couldn´t find precise data. In the end, whether it´s due to greed or due to high prodution costs or both, their latest offerings don´t impress in terms of value for money.

FYI, Olympus only will break even, on 4/3 amd m43 cameras and lenses, providing everything goes according to plan, in a few years time. This is information available on the net. Staring up entire new product lines and ranges, especially as a smaller market player, with th einvestmets required beforehand, is extremely costly.

As in value fo rmoney: that is always in the eye of the beholder. With an OM D5, you get a professional system camera, the size of the sensor doesn't matter too much here, with advances in technology that no one else offers yet. Looking at similar (APS-C) cameras from e.g. Canon and Nikon, it actually is cheaper than its counterparts, be it that it can't focus as fast as the Canon and Nikon offerings do. Other than that, it seems right up there, so a slightly cheaper price, IMO, is quite reasonable.

It is a lot fo money, yes, but in the end I guess value is always in the eye of thebeholder.

Personally, I have been shooting with a Panny GF2 and a few lenses for a few months now, next to my 5D II and 1D Mk III, and I do think that m43 is quite promising. It is approximately at the same level as the better APS-C cameras IMO, but a lot more compact. I do intend to upgrade the body to one of the newer 16 MP ones once I have established the entire (lens) kit for it I'd like (2 more to go, maybe 3).

I got this to replace the G10 I have, and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised, even shooting in rather dark circumstances. IMO, this is the format to watch, because this format offers what others don't yet, namely compactness and still a surprisingly good system, as good as many APS-C dslrs out there, if not better.

Kind regards, Wim
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....
