You can use a colour filter meant for B&W photography on a camera with an RGB sensor, as BC states too. However, this is akin using a B%W colour filter while shootign with colour negative film - you lose a lot of light and information, and teh effect is questionable, due to th efact that there is no relation between filtered light and sensor filter array. Wthmonochrome or B&W one records general luminosity so to speak, which is really no possible with a colour film or colour sensor unless used with out a filter and taking all channels into account..
As mentioned, you could use them, but the book stating that the green and blue cells become useless when using a red filter is entirely correct.
IOW, it is better to do monochrome prints or images from colour digital stills in postprocessing. You'll get more detail that way as well as you can get the maximum detail from an image prior to the conversion. With a filter mounted on the lens of a digital camera with rgb sensor, you lose information, and hence detail, much like you would with such a filter mounted on a camera with e.g. colour negative film.
