I think you're vastly over-estimate how many enthusiasts are using full frame. As MST is saying, APS-C is selling a lot more, and is far from dead.
Smartphones with cameras are killing off the simple digital cameras little by little for sure. Phones like the Nokia N8 and the 808 (specially the 808) makes simple digital cameras less and less needed, why have them when you can get everything in your phone? But APS-C isn't even in the sights of smartphones.
IMO full frame is mostly overrated. There are now two reasons I see where I would want a full frame camera, wider angle for mye tilt shift lens and thinner DoF for sports, other that, none.
