Looking good, yes.

Looking silly... About as big as the DSLR (see them next to eachother) minus what makes a DSLR nice (OVF, PD_AF mirror). Awful design (ugly) and that grip... can't be very nice to hold and handle.

And that pancake.. sure, it is thin. And sure its IQ will be so-so. I don't see this bringing Ricoh/Pentax a big success...

I'm mostly with BC here (except that I can imagine it to actually be comfortable). And I still don't get the K-mount idea, except that they can start their mirrorless system now with a large existing lens portfolio. But a "real" mirrorless (with short flange distance), native lenses and K-mount adapter still sounds like a much better idea to me...

Pentax cameras have always been relatively compact (compared to nikon or canon). From a business perspective this makes sense to me as it reduce their production cost (conversely increase margins). It also allows them to compete with true mirror-less systems from a marketing perspective. Yea - it is not as compact but then again is the fuji pro-1 that much smaller ?

Camera systems with short flanged register distances only gain a size benefit when used together with a relatively small range of lenses, namely non-retrofocal shortish widish angle lenses. Ironically, that group of lenses also tend to be mediocre on typical digital sensors compared to their much longer retrofocal counterparts. Of course longer lenses (>45mm or so) are the same length from the image plane regardless of minor distance differences in register lengths. So there would be very little advantage to a short flange distance system except that the body sans lens is much more sexy and a set of sexy-small but crappy primes can be offered. Pentax's approach to flange distance makes as much sense as any, if not more.

Hi guys,

The general opinion seems to be that it's not the most beautiful camera and with no OVF. So really it's not my bag,but I bet the image quality will be far better than the Nikon V1 and the Canon G1. Existing Pentax DSLR owners who buy the K01 (specially K100,KX,KM + K10/20 owners wanting to benefit from the new Sony sensor) will not be able to use the new compact lenses on their K DSLRs and will have to satisfy themselves with their lenses limited edition or not.At least all Pentax lenses are supported by the K01! I still want to see a new DSLR, but at least to me this is a far better direction for Pentax to go than the PQ. Now to see it's AF performance.Lastly will it attract buyers with no Pentax lenses?

Easily. Especially the Nikon.

For me it seems the K-01 is best for video and time lapse. At least that's what I want it for <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> I saw the full specs, but couldn't see if it had manual exposure for video or not, but regardless, it's better suited for video than the K-5 or any other Pentax camera so far.

One important detail for senior citizens like myself: According to the spec sheet on dpreview, it supports focus peaking. If this is well implemented, it could greatly improve handling with MF lenses and allow for a more precise focusing of fast lenses even in comparison with the excellent optical viewfinder of the K5/K7 models. So the purchase could well make sense to owners of K-mount legacy lenses. The 40mm Pentax limited pancake is a very good lens. I'm sure that the bundle fits well into a coat pocket. A pity there seems to be no option for attaching an additional electronic viewfinder - or did I miss something? I'm looking forward to trying one out.
