Looks like a nice walk-around lens for some D3100 :-)

P.s. is it me or bokeh in the landscape shots looks a bit rough?
#3
A bit surprised by the relatively weak border/corner performance at f2.8, but not a super big issue in use (just surprising). What I find a bit odd is how the front element changes from nicely recessed to almost exposed through the focus range (just odd, not really bad).

The bokeh is a nice surprise, makes this lens a great alternative to the 35mm f1.8 and a very nice wider angle macro lens. The Sony's bokeh seems even smoother, judging from the samples.

I like the front element thing. One of my pet hates in macro lenses is a recessed front element which wastes working distance, even if it has a side benefit of being its own lens hood.

Thanks for the review. What is the working distance at 1:1 ?

Nice one, but I already bought the Tokina M35 pro and hope for review for that one. I've seen sample images shot by you, when will the review be available on line? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

The Tokina is the next DX review to be published. Not sure yet when that is going to happen, though.

I'll measure it when I return home (I'm on the road this week).

Checking the flower close-ups, I think the bokeh looks very pleasant... And regarding the landscape shots @f/4 and f/2.8, I can say the bokeh is less nervous than the one I get from my 105mm VR (and that's the main reason why I rarely opt for the 105mm VR for the portrait shots)...

It's a nice little lens but I really hate lenses without IF design. If I were in Nikon I think I'd rather have the 35/1.8 + Raynox 250 for the price of the 40/2.8.
