Next PZ lens test report: Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 50mm f/2 ZF (Nikon FX)
#1
This one completes the FX reviews of the ZF range ... at least the currently available range (I'm trying to get my hands on the ZF.2 35/1.4 ASAP):

There are a lot of great 50f2/60f2 macros. Did you have a personal impression of this lens compared to the competition that might not be represented in the raw numbers ? I did read the last paragraph but I was thinking more along the lines of image quality.

Then again one big negative (as you mentioned) with both this lens and the 100f2 is the raw cost.

I had a think about this one and I'm struggling to think of more than one, the crop sensor only Tamron. Even after a web search could only find an Olympus to add to the list. So neither of those are direct replacements for the full frame Zeiss. Of course if you drop down to f/2.8, then macro lenses are plentiful.

I do agree on the cost side though, as I was mad enough to get this. With hindsight, it would have been more economic just to get a regular 50mm f/1.4 and separately a f/2.8 50/60mm macro. Having said that, the MF experience on it is so nice, it makes me want to MF more!

That's true; I was thinking of the old zuiko 50f2 and then there was the c/y 60 but that was f2.8 and canon 50f2.5 so I guess f2.0 is less common. But I often wonder if users of the lens find optical pros/cons that are not reflected in the raw numbers.

Well, one could state that the ZF (or in fact almost any ZF) has quite strong contrast and as such the perceived sharpness is maybe higher than with other lenses. But then, almost any current macro lens performs on a very high level, so there are hardly any substantial differences.

Most of all, working with ZF lenses is great fun if you don't mind manual focus (or even enjoy it).

I wish I could say the same. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> I want this lens (and the 100/2 MP) in ZA mount with SSM and IF design like the 24/2.

I think here it needs to be one thing or another. An IF design implies a totally different optical design in itself. And with SSM the MF feel will be different too. I do want to have AF on it too for when I'm not doing macro, but long term I think I'll end up with a standard prime for that to replace the cheapo 1.8 I have now.

I know that. I want SSM and IF design while retaining the same BQ and IQ. I mean, if I am allowed to dream..... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
