It is a bit hard to quantify the 7D noise quality... I think it is about a stop more usable, but that's not to say it is necessarily a stop better depending on how you measure it... I used to use the 50D regularly to 1600, rarely to 3200 and above that it was just too messy. On the 7D, I use it regularly to 3200, and haven't had a need to go really higher. On shutter sound, it has been too long since I sold the 50D on so I can't remember side by side. The 7D did sound different, a bit... let's say "quicker and lighter".
