Just pulled the trigger on a 7D

As the title states, I just ordered a new Canon EOS 7D. This will be my first brand new camera which is exciting in itself but I cant wait to try the 7D out.

Congrats! Brand-new stuff indeed are exciting.

I currently have a 50D and 1D Mk II and I am hoping the 7D slots in between the two taking most of the pros and less of the cons. Ideally I would like an APS-C 1D since my type of photography is usually focal length limited but require great AF (I do mostly birding, static and in flight).

Allow me to be the unpopular guy and point out some things for the sake of better understanding. Let me first start off by saying that you're not going to be disappointed with the 7D. However... I had a look at your flickriver links and it seems that you could have benefited well from a FF camera. For example, if you take your 'most interesting' photos (as rated by flickr), very few of them (e.g. 3 out of the top 20) might not have been possible with, say, a 5D2. But we're talking about adding one more camera to your collection... so you have the 50D and the 1D2 for such critical/BIF shots. A 5D2 would've been better suited for the other 17/20.

Hopefully the 7D's ... and I should get even more detail than the 50D offers (when it nails the focus).

Don't forget that wanting more resolution (from high pixel density sensors) reduces the smallest f number you can use before you start to lose resolution (see DLA table). On your 50D, you were able to go down to ~f/7.6 but now on the 7D, anything below f/6.8 will reduce the maximum resolution. Are your lenses good enough for this? While the problem applies to all cases, it hits landscape use the most because you often want to stop down a lot to maximise DOF (but then you'll lose resolution).

Also, since you're planning to see more detail or magnify the final images more (e.g. viewing at 100% or printing larger rather than resizing down or printing at the same sizes), you're also going to have reduced DOF. In other words, less things will be sharp when you view at 100%. Remember to consider this point alongside the DLA thing I said above too.

So, if I was in your situation, I think I'd have sold the 1D2 and bought a 5D2 instead of the 7D and keep the 50D for AF. If AF was that important maybe then sell everything and just a 7D now and a 5D2 later for resolution.

I hope you don't take this post the wrong way... just wanted to make an informative post and give some alternate views.
