Next PZ lens test report - Nikkor AF-S 24mm f/1.4 G ED
#11
It's obvus why is Nikkor better rated than Canon, it has better bokeh and better extreme corner performance than Canon.
It is not obvious, as bokeh in other real life tests looks a bit better with the Canon, and the Canon border performance is better than that of the Nikon (according to the photozone data).

Also the Canon has about half the CA.

Both lenses are very good, and should basically be rated the same.

Here is a very informative test sample from a dpreview forums member, take a look for yourself.

And don't start calling me a fan boy again, please.

looking at the LoCAs, it appears that there is a significant focus shift when stopping down

Depends how you look at it. The Canon has non-existing corner resolution at f/1.4 but it is better at medium apertures.

Anyway, We're talking about a 3.2 vs 3.3 rating here. The ratings have simply a half stop fuzzyness but we'll not go into finer numbers - the amount of data does not permit a 100% scale neither here nor elsewhere.

Have to disagree with you on this, Klaus. Please see (large version in the link) below:

The Canon 24 1.4 II has noticeably better corner and center resolution than the Nikon 24 1.4G at close distances, wide open. Because of this, the corners are much easier to focus on with the Canon. At longer distances, the differences are not noticeable except in the center (where the Nikon has a lead). I'm sure the the reason for your findings is the very strong field curvature in the Canon (wide open).

The bokehs of the two lenses are also optimised differently... the link above illustrates and discusses this too.

Indeed.

It would be a show stopper for me - if I were in the market for such a lens.

Certainly not. Field curvature is taken care of in our testing.

Our "corners" are still more extreme here.

You may notice that the Canon has a better border behavior though.

Then either you guys or me have a bad sample of one of the lenses? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I have specifically refocused for the regions/points of interests and I can see both corners on the frames... I haven't seen any de-centering related problems with either of the lenses. Any ideas about what's causing the differences in the observations then?
That may be so but even the point I have chosen is too far close to the edge of the frame (if you think of the circular border it represents) and people will unlikely put the subject that far out in a real-world composition. It's well outside the width of the frame for most parts and goes up to 97.6% of the frame's height. If you choose a point that is even "more extreme", I'm not sure whether that's a figure that's going to be useful for anyone.

Also readers would find it useful to see what these points are as most websites that choose only specific points show where they are on the frame.

Then I'm wondering why you said that the Canon has non-existing border behaviour, keeping the center-corner differences shown at f/1.4 between the N and C in the graphs aside <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

All it takes is a look into the Lens Test FAQ ....
