It never is easier to stitch a couple of images than to take one image. And stitching video is even less easy.
Specialist lenses for specialist jobs.
Impressive to see such lenses, even if they are general oddities.

In VR, you can move and zoom yourslef to the place of interest.
Stitching is always with a time-lag and inside rooms it's pretty complicated.and looks weird. It's better to go spherical instead of trying to bend rectangualr pictures from rooms. I did that a coupple of times with a pano-stitcher, rooms are very tricky. Small rooms even more.
If I want to mix virtual reality with artifical generated content, I need a very well defined lens to make the mix believable. I guess, the people interested in such a lens (or even the stereo version of it), know, what they are looking for.

Looks like fun. Are there many other big sensor >180 degree lenses? The monster of a Nikon one is all I can think of which is both very old and rare.

You must be referring to the 5+ kilo Nikkor 6mm f2.8 fisheye, which has a 220 degree AOV? That is one expensive lens, one should be so lucky to come across that in a yard sale.

Compared to the Nikkor, this one is probably cheap (and better).

Is that price a side effect of desirability and rarity, kinda like the Canon 1200?
I was thinking the lens of this thread could be a more affordable option. Makes 180 degree fisheyes seem like a bargain in comparison.

I thought there was the Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 for "regular" 4/3 system (adaptable to µ4/3 rather easily)? Admittedly it "only" goes to 180° ( this is nuts already) and good luck finding a specimen in that mount though...
UPDATE: apparently it's no longer made in that fit (unsurprisingly) if there was ever one. So I stand corrected.
