Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 lens - DaveO - 02-15-2014

Does anyone have experience with this lens or know where it has been rated.  I am thinking of going to Mammoth Cave next month and have been thinking of getting a fast wide angle lens.  Not interested in Nikon lenses because of the price.

I have a Nikon D 300s.   I have a Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8 lens already, but not sure if it is wide enough.  No flash is allowed at Mammoth Cave.

I used the v. 1 of the lens on a Nikon D90. I actually liked the lens more than I did the camera in the end. I'm not exactly giving away secrets in that the lens is one of those better between 11mm and 14mm than the longer end. It is quite a bulky lens especially in comparison to the Tamron. But to me everything seemed to be in its right place when using the lens, it just felt comfortable to me.

Tokina lenses are not up there with Sigma and Tamron let alone Canon with fast and almost silent AF but then again you an use  77mm filters on this lens. Think out your shots a little in advance and you will not have any problems.

Good manual focus with decently sized focus and zoom rings. I'm more into 24mm to 100mm myselt so this lens is a little wider than I was used to but I had no problems getting used to it.

There is a review of the lens here on this site, a quick glance shows it to be one of the sharpest large aperture wide angle lenses out there!

But there is a big shortfall with the lens and that's flare and ghostings!

I found the lens test under the Canon lenses, not the Nikon lenses.

Am also considering a used Nikon 16-85 mm VR lens as it would be more versatile and would probably be used more.

Well, the 16-85 VR would not give you really that much more wide angle than the Tamron you already have.

It would give me VR, which the Tamron does not have and an extra 35 mm on the long end.

Well, I gave in and ordered the Nikon 16-85 mm VR lens instead.  I figured I would get much more use out of it versus the Tokina 11-16 mm.  I didn't like the idea of a non detachable lens hood because of the bulbous front element.

No non detachable lens hood, no bulbous front element. No idea ?
