Suggestions for NEX macro extension tubes - stoppingdown - 12-30-2013

So far my macro experience has been disappointing, in the sense that I'm not really good at it (yet?). Probably my biggest problem is that I'm really bad at manual focusing, which of course is important in this area. Given this initial handicap, I've not exercised enough to get at a decent level in other things, such as composition etc.

 

Now with my new Sony NEX-6 I'd like to retry and see whether focus peaking and other manual focusing assist features can help me. Owing lenses such as 10-18mm, 30mm and 16-70mm I think that the latter could be a good start with the aid of some extension tubes. Looking around I see products by Kenko (two tubes) and Opteka (three tubes). With my Nikon stuff I used some Kenko tubes without electronics, but now I understand they are needed because of the electronic aperture control.

 

Opteka sounds better to me because of the three tubes - but it's a manufacturer I've never experienced so far. Comments? Other suggestions?

Just curious that you were not considering Sony's NEX Macro Lens (SEL30M35, E30 F/3.5)?
I use it more often than the SEL24F18Z (24mm F/1.8).

First, because I don't want to buy another lens now, and probably I wouldn't buy a lens for macro alone. Second, because the review I've seen here about the SEL30M35 is not good at all.

Opteka is a rebrander, ( you can also buy the Samyang lenses as Opteka lenses).

So, have a look at the pictures of the extension tubes, they will probably be the same as others sold on ebay and amazon, some maybe no name or other names. but anyway, you might come across various user comments on amazon.

Opteka may be not quite the same mechnical quality as the Kenko ones, but for only 2 tubes the Kenkos seem pretty expensive. The Opteka set will give you a lot longer extension and therefore higher magnification.

Okay. Personally, I use Sony's SEL30M35 for a lot of different shots except macro photography.

I understand, but I already have a 30mm lens and I'd like to differentiate the focals as much as possible. In my Nikon life I accumulated a certain number of lenses and in the end most of them are taking the dust. I'd like to reorganize my arsenal in a more efficient way.

If you still have Nikon lenses, you might want to get an adaptor for your NEX.
