Sony rumor - Klaus - 04-29-2013

I'm sort of wondering what to make of this.

Unlike some other guys I do not believe that NEX can go full format. While the sensor may fit physically there is still not sufficient space given the mount mechanics based on the "simulations" that I've seen.

An APS-C mirrorless camera based on the A-mount ... now I struggle to see the logic vs NEX. Two mirrorless mounts sound bizarre to me.

A full format SLT-only strategy is just as strange. An APS-C SLT costs almost nothing based on the full format SLT and NEX parts.

However, it would make sense if Sony abandoned Alpha given the low market share. It would fit into the grand picture that Sony is in need of restructuring/streamlining. That said I can't really imagine that they are that brutal.

I was skeptical about FF E-mount too, considering Sony needs to move the sensor for its image stabilization. But since it already has been done:

I can't not believe in that NEX FF can be done.

Not sure of how attractive that will be though, considering Sony already has problems making the corners look ok on APS-C (NEX-5/7) with lenses designed for the E-mount flange distance...

Ok, so I stay corrected then.

Although technically there is no proof that it actually works.

There are no FF E-mount lenses.

With mounted E-mount lenses it falls back to APS-C.

Maybe the truth behind that rumor is, that they simply remove the mirror now in their SLT cameras. So, keep the product line, but simply get rid of old technology. SLT is already half a step in that direction, isn't it?

Yeah, but their PD sensor AF isn't quite as good as needed if the NEX 6 can serve as a guidance. Not in low light at least.

My gut feeling behind this is that APS-C Alpha mount will stay alive through adapted NEX only. This was an obvious direction ever since they released the mirror adapter. Putting aside handling specific issues, is a NEX + the mirror adapter that much different from an APS-C SLT? Just make a NEX body with more SLT like ergonommics, bundle it with the mirror adapter, and you have your SLT. With the benefit you can also remove the adapter and fit E-mount lenses.

This could also become the "Pro" NEX, perhaps a NEX 9?

Because this solution doesn't need to be the smallest size, I wonder if they can put back in body stabilisation?

There was an update to the rumour which said there would be future aspc a-mount camera they  just wouldn't be 'SLT' ...

....oops, not a real small mirrored OVF light weight revolution (devolution?) surely - there is at least one someone here who thinks the SLT/EVF thingy might have been a wee mistake for the A mount, but that person could be wrong

.... anyway, for a system that is apparently not so popular, the gear still sells in a flash if the price is right ....

Mirrorless sales are not really that big compared to DSLR/SLT, but DSLR space is owned by Canikon and profit marging for mirrorless should be much higher.
