Still impressive but with a little penalty at f/1.4:

The lens is called "Distagon" on the front page. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I thought you said that this lens also suffered corner issues on the nex-7. This is more of a question; but do you think there really is a sensor corner issue with this lens or the lens has reach the supportable pixel density ?

Also what advantage does EA-LA2 offer over EA-LA1 ?

next PZ lens test report: Zeiss ZA 85mm f/1.4 - Rainer - 03-24-2012

To me, it seems, using the adapter and using lenses constructed for a

larger register distance is the key for proper imagequality in corners on a

body like the nex-7. That said, a user of the nex-7 is likely one who wants

(and pays) more portability. So, the 85/1.4 is likely not the most obvious

choice anyway, nevertheless, it's certainly a "benchmark lens".

Just my thoughts ... Rainer

Both is in the text. Look at the A700 performance with this lens, it is very clear the f1.4 performance is somewhat hindered. For the rest, the resolution bar differences are more or less consistent with the resolution jump, just not the edge performance at f1.4.

Also, the advantage of the EA-LA2 is clear from the text: it allows AF (phase detection AF at that).

Not really (the first part). With such focal lengths (85mm) it will not make much of a difference whether the lens is designed for A-mount or E-mount. Only with focal lengths which are short, and demand a different, bigger design for a bigger flange distance, you would see real differences.

Well the text didn't really spell out the issue with phase focus though I have to admit it is obvious once you mentioned it.

Looking at the alpha 700 review I'm not so sure that it is obvious the issue at f1.4 is the nex sensor vs max resolution. yes it is true the drop off between f1.4 and f2 is greater; the peak is not so far off. The problem is that you cannot really compare the two peaks (different camera) but it still leaves open the question; given the alpha 700 review was the shape restricted by the sensor or the lens. I.e, if he were to test on slt 77 or next 5n would you see a curve similar to the nex 7 or alpha 700.

I don't see sample images with the 85f1.4 on the nex 7 but one indication of a sensor issue would be significant smearing in the edges.

Btw as klaus expected the cv 15 and biogen 21 show signifcant smearing on the pro-1; though unlike the nex 7 no colour shift.

Thanx for the test. The dense 24M sensor is very demanding in terms of lens quality.

The limit of current lenses can also be found in the quick test at http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/03/d-resolution-tests with the lower density 36m ff of D800

On the other hand I'm using the Zeiss 24 F2 on A77 and I'm very pleased with the results starting from wide open.

Any chance to test the Zeiss (ZA) 24 F2 on the small 24M sensor?
