Will the AF in the 5D Mark III be identical with the AF in the Canon 1DX??? - haring - 03-04-2012

Will the AF in the Canon 1Dx be identical with the AF in the Canon 5D Mark III I know it will be similar 61 point AF system but will it be identical?

If yes, why would most of us buy the Canon 1Dx for twice as much? I know the canon frame rate is much higher (faster) but I don't see too much difference between the two cameras which would justify me to spend twice as much for a camera...? I am a wedding photographer and I don't use the video capabilities and I don't really need the high frame rate, either.

What I need is fast and accurate focusing... It is hard to believe that the autofocus in the Canon 5D Mark III will be identical with the one Canon builds into the Canon 1Dx...

I am hesitant to pre-order it... Should I pre-order it??? I am willing to buy only it if it is exactly the same!

Any toughs?

So you are not the target for the 1D-X. It is a professional photo journalist/sports photographer body with long battery duration. The 5D mk III is for for instance wedding photographers, landscape shooters, and so on... everyone that does not need super high speed shot to shot, long battery time and controls one can operate wearing gloves.

The AF system indeed is the same.

Dpreview indicates it's not exactly the same :

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos5dmarkiii/4

"It's not the entire 1D X AF system - because the 5D Mark III doesn't have the 1D X's 100,000 pixel metering sensor to gain tracking information from, nor a dedicated DIGIC 4 processor to make sense of it all. However, even without them, it's still one of the most comprehensive AF systems on the market and, most importantly, brings the camera much closer to the level of contemporary Nikons."

Rob Galbraith notes :

"All AF settings and options are identical to the EOS-1D X, except one: there is no EOS iTR AF (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition AF) option on the 5D Mark III, since it requires the higher-resolution metering sensor of the EOS-1D X."

S.

Sylvain, thanks for correcting me. I had not read that.

Is it possible the AF sensor, in itself, is the same? Only the combination with the metering system would be a difference.

Regardless, it's still quite an improvement over the mk2.

That's close enough.

Popo, Brightcolours,

It's my understanding too that it's the combo that will make it different in action while using effectively the exact same AF sensor.

Having to track motion critical pictures at 14fps is probably another story.

Yakim, with all due respect, I don't know how you can read that and conclude that.

While I could agree that operationnally, it's likely it won't make such a difference, it's clearly going to be a "different AF", while using the same AF sensor substrate. Clearly a nuance.

From memory, wasn't the D300 or D300s said to be using the "same AF" as the D3? I think I remember reports it was quite a different story in the field though. Nikonians will correct me.

But as popo said, a welcome improvement nevertheless. To my susprise, that 5D MKIII is quite attractive to me.

Maybe I should have said: That's close enough when considering the price difference.

I'm not a nikonian <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />... But yes they have the same AF modul and metering sensor, and they both cope AF with the matrix metering system. Though I'm not sure about the difference in programming behind. But if there's a difference in practical terms, I guess it could be because of the AF point coverage on the frame.

AF & metering systems of 1D-X and 5D-III seem to be a different story though... AF modules could be more or less the same but 5D-III is not equipped with a 100K RGB sensor for metering, which helps AF system for moving objects. I think this should make a difference.

But all in all, as you and Popo already mentioned, I agree too that the AF and metering performance of 5D3 is clearly improved (at least on paper)...
