NEX-5N AF low light miseries - Guest - 12-27-2011 Yes; the auto focus system on the 5n (and probably 7) require quite a bit of light and generally is quite slow (not nearly as good as the ep-3). However, the beauty of these cameras is that they make it easier to manual focus (though the average consumer might not buy that as a viable alternative0. -- Here is a quote from dpreview of the 7 (someone else dug it out but i think it explains the the issue): -- "One weak point of the NEX-7's AF system is when used indoors under artificial lighting, which tends to present a tricky combination of low light and relatively low contrast. At this point focus speed drops right down, and the camera has a tendency to fall back on its 'large green rectangle' mode - in essence analyzing almost all of the frame to acquire focus. The problem here, aside from speed, is accuracy - the camera has a tendency to focus on the background, so you may well need several attempts to get correct focus. In our assessment the NEX-7 is being outperformed by current Micro four Thirds cameras in this respect, even when using a fast lens like the Carl Zeiss 24mm F1.8 - however it's probably still a bit better than the Fujifilm X100."
Hmmh, I had no problems with the old 5. This "relatively low contrast" assessment may be slightly optimistic - the guy who described his troubles over at dpreview couldn´t properly focus on a Christmas tree, which is a pretty contrasty motif. Kind of bizarre that a cam, which is a top performer at high ISO settings, fails to focus indoors.
Well, I took a number of christmas pictures with the X100 ... I had no trouble with the AF at all. From hearsay ... the AF of the X100 seems to have improved with the latest firmware version. NEX-5N AF low light miseries - Guest - 12-31-2011 Perhaps not the right thread; but give us some preliminary feedback on the 7 - esp as it compares to the 5n <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> - One complaint I did read about the 7 was that with the 5 it rest against your nose so it has less shake; where as the 7's position of the viewfinder mean that it does not touch the face and is more prone to shake (just repeating what I read; no clue if it is true).
