How do I discern Canon EF-S 18-55mm vers I & II? - evalon - 12-14-2011 Hello <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I'm considering buying a Canon EOS 550d with the 18-55 mm zoom lens, however, notice that the review here on photozone.de forum clearly is more favorable on the: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS than on the: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II But how do I see on the lens which is which? I'd appreciate help with this <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Best regards, Jesper How do I discern Canon EF-S 18-55mm vers I & II? - Klaus - 12-14-2011 Look for the silver focal length ring: mk I: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/273560 mk II: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/618375 How do I discern Canon EF-S 18-55mm vers I & II? - Klaus - 12-14-2011
Look for the silver focal length ring: mk I: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/273560 mk II: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/618375
Just to mention - they are the same optically. If that's the case, just look at that the prints on the barrel to see if it shows IS (image stabilizer) james How do I discern Canon EF-S 18-55mm vers I & II? - mousefire - 12-15-2011 Lenstip.com tested them and it seemed that 18-55 IS version II is worse..As Klaus said, it has just been even more simplified on the mechanical side, for example, IS system: http://www.lenstip.com/232.3-Lens_review-Canon_EF-S_18-55_mm_f_3.5-5.6_IS_Build_quality_and_image_stabilization.html http://www.lenstip.com/304.3-Lens_review-Canon_EF-S_18-55_mm_f_3.5-5.6_IS_II_Build_quality_and_image_stabilization.html How do I discern Canon EF-S 18-55mm vers I & II? - evalon - 12-15-2011 Hi All, And thank you for replying. The versions I was thinking about are the versions that are mentioned in the lens reviews here on photozone.de. The IS version: http://www.opticallimits.com/canon-eos/181-canon-ef-s-18-55mm-f35-56-is-test-report--review?start=2 The "II" version: http://www.opticallimits.com/canon-eos/180-canon-ef-s-18-55mm-f35-56-ii-test-report--review @Klaus: Thanks for making it clear with the silver ring. That's visible :-) So - with this in mind - if I buy a current EOS 550d kit it seems I will then get the "II" version lens - is that correct? Thanks again for replying, Jesper How do I discern Canon EF-S 18-55mm vers I & II? - Guest - 12-15-2011 Today there are 7 different versions named 18-55 as listed in http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/ef/ef-s.html I do not know which one will end in your kit. It's just my opinion you will not get an USM version. Some dealers (of the "creative" bunch) will repackage kits: Original lens is removed and sold seperately. Then you will find another type - commonly a lesser valued one - in the package. And some dealers just create a package out of the blue. Why not ask the dealer? Ciao, Walter |
