Next PZ lens test report: Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f/2 ZF/ZF.2 - mst - 10-23-2011

To get into gear again, here's another Zeiss review. Not the most stellar performer on the D7000, in addition, its field of view is somewhat in the middle of nowhere (for my own taste).

If somebody makes an adapter, would you test it on a Pentax Q? sorry, couldnt resists. I somehow fail to see the point in using a 28mm, manual focus full frame lens on a dx camera when there are better, cheaper Af lenses with more than decent build quality around.

That's probably a valid conclusion from the review, to which you won't come without the review, right? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

So, do you want me to no longer publish reviews of lenses which fall short of expectations or to which better alternatives are around?

no, I was just being foolish.... never mind. However, I have to say even if this lens was optically spactacular, I probably still wouldnt consider it for use on dx as in practice 90% of my shots would end up being out of focus unless I used a tripod with Liveview. For tripod usage I wouldnt of course need such a fast and heavy lens.

So was I, sorry, forgot to add another smiley after the second sentence.

You're right of course that the group of users interested in using manual lenses on APS-C cameras at all (not limited to Nikon, but also including NEX an the likes) is limited.

On the other hand, Zeiss obviously sells quite a few of these lenses (just as Cosina/Voitländer with their SL II series) and that was already the case before FX arrived.

I think we (you) should continue to do these tests, Zeiss is high quality and there will always be takers (I think). Again, I think it makes perfect sense on a D700 for landscapes and "easy" reporting!

Why "landscapes"?

It is more s street shooting lens, stilling between the classic street shooting focal length 35mm (on FF) and 50mm "standard zoom", on a D7000.

No field curvation and less vignetting and it loses its sex appeal on cropped body? how come?

Well, the MTF figures are not really stellar, are they?

Because there is nothing wrong with using a 28mm lens for landscapes. I agree it may not always be the preferred focal length, but it can very well be used and we all do it from time to time, don't we? I would have no more problem having this lens as the only lens on an FF camera when travelling light - no more so than a 35mm!
