It has a longer reach than the standard 70-200mm f4, and 2/3rds to 1 1/3 of a stop slower. With an 1.4x TC on the 70-200mm f4 you still do not have the same tele reach, but at least the apertures are comparable. A 2x TC will lose you AF with the 70-200mm f4. panasonic MFT 100-300... - nandadevieast - 09-19-2011
Hmmm? I will not use this for birds or wildlife, but for looking at new creative possibilities in general use, esp, landscape. I have a 100-300 with me for some time, but i don't own it. I know its a decent lens, but was wondering about the 70-200 being better than this.... I have not been able to master this lens <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Too long... panasonic MFT 100-300... - Guest - 09-19-2011
Any users here?
I have have no "hard" data (resolution figures) but subjectively rate it as a pretty good but not stellar performer. Built quality is (just) about acceptable, that´s the drawback of its modest weight. One has to take care at 600 mm due to handshake and the shallow DOF. Shooting at 600 mm without tri-/monopod really can be a bit of a challenge and requires a good technique. AF is surprisingly fast but not 100% accurate with a GF1 (misses in part due to the shallow DOF?). At 600 mm clearly sharpest around f/7.1-f/8. Owners typically say its (much) better at 600 mm than the Pana 45-200 at 400 mm (I don´t have the 45-200...). Others rate it optically about equal to the Oly 75-300 but the Oly is better built. Virtually no CAs at any focal length (software correction by Panasonic/Adobe?). Sebastians review is long overdue... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> panasonic MFT 100-300... - Guest - 09-21-2011
I will not use this for birds or wildlife, but for looking at new creative possibilities in general use, esp, landscape.
I overlooked this remark concerning your intended use of this lens. I tend to think that a good 70-300 mm lens on an APS-C body would serve you better. The 200-600 mm zoom range of the Pana is rather extreme for general use and landscapes. If the weight of the APS-C stuff bothers you the new Pana 45-175 mm lens could be an interesting option if it´s optically better than the Oly 40-150 or the Pana 45-200. panasonic MFT 100-300... - nandadevieast - 09-28-2011 I am getting a EF 135 F2. It will become 200mm on my crop camera. I will return the 100-300 then. Photozone is testing 100-300...maybe they can tell me the headline... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' /> panasonic MFT 100-300... - nandadevieast - 10-14-2011 when is the photozone test of this lens coming? panasonic MFT 100-300... - nandadevieast - 02-12-2012 Hi, Has someone compared the Nikon 70-300 VR with Panasonic 100-300....which optics is better? Panny on G1 and Nikon on D5100? Background: i should have one tele and since i own both the platforms, i can chose which one... Does high pixel density of MFT help in resolving more detail for tele shots? regards, panasonic MFT 100-300... - Guest - 02-12-2012 The olympus 50-200 would also be an option as it is a bit brighter and has very high resolution. Back to the original question by "nandadevieast" - the Pana 100-300 is indeed a good but tricky lens (the latest firmware update is said to improve the OIS significantly though) - if a focal length of 600mm is needed, go for it. |
