SAMYANG pentax versions work as A lenses, i.e. aperture is recorded to the exif and you can dial aperture from camera automatically, also focus confirmation works and all exposure modes are usable. With 14 mm focusing is not big issue anuway. Screwdrive would be nice of couse

The "problem" is that it's not that attractive to APS-C users.
The Nikkor 35/1.8 or Sony 35/1.8 are more suitable in their respective systems.
It's really a massive lens for a "standard" lens and in APS-C land it is just that.

Hi. Thanks for the reviews, they're really helpful. I'm an EOS APS-C user and want a "normal" fast lens, unfortunately there aren't many options. Canon's 35mm f/2 is old, not exactly cheap and not exactly fast, so I'd rather get a more practical zoom like Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 than a one stop faster old prime. Two stops and better optical quality is another story, so Samyang looks nice, although it's big, heavy and not that cheap as APS-C lenses mentioned above (Nikon's or Sony's 35mm f/1.8).
If I understood the review correctly, you can only select f/1.4 or f/2 but no aperture in between, which seems a bit limiting. There's a "video" version of this lens on ebay with the aperture ring "unclicked" so it rotates smoothly, will I have any problems with this smooth ring while shooting stills? I'm really just a beginner in photography and maybe missing something, smooth aperture ring sounds interesting but is it ok for stills?

You are right - there's no stop between f/1.4 and f/2. That's rather typical for manual lenses.
I'm not aware of a video version - even their video fisheye (for Sony NEX) has "clicks".
I reckon this is a bit of a general problem with all AF lenses as well because the aperture dial on the camera does also induce shake upon usage.

I think it's done by removing some sort of a ball inside the lens so the ring doesn't click anymore. I'm wondering though whether it's good for photo or not, are there any downsides to having a smooth aperture ring for stills?

It means you can't set aperture by feel easily any more. For example, I have their 8mm fisheye and can set the aperture by moving it wide open and counting the clicks in. Handy at night when I can't see it.
Also, when you set the aperture, it will be a bit more variable. So if you need to return to *exact* settings that may be harder. In practice I don't think this would be a real problem.

Thanks guys, got the "regular" version today, although under "Bower" brand-name. Can't say it's that sharp at f/1.4, looks pretty soft, but from f/2 onwards it's very good. What you could mention in the review is the performance of this lense while talking of comatic aberration. It seems to perform very efficiently compared to its very expensive main manufacturers counter parts.

This lense is great for astrophoto (as the two others samyang 35mm f/1.4 and 14mm f/1.4)
I assume this is a very specific case but this lense with its aperture and coma control looks designed for astrophoto.
