The trend is that Canon is on the rise again, and Nikon is losing a bit of market share again.
2006, Canon 47%, Nikon 33%, Sony 6%
2007, Canon 42%, Nikon 40%
2008, Canon 38%, Nikon 37%, Sony 13%
2009 ?
2010, Canon 44.5%, Nikon 29.8%, Sony 11.9%

It does depend which way you look at the figures... while I believe Canon are doing well in the DSLR segments and "any camera" unit count, Sony are strong if you count changeable lens systems (NEX).
End of the day, I'll ditch the 'SLR when something truly beats it across all counts. That day is still a very long way off. Until then I think Canon will still get a fair chunk of my cash.

I believe this proves the following fact:
"Statistics are like coy / charming women... They attract you, show a lot of things, but give you nothing..."
Fortunately, the quality of DSLR / optics / compact etc... does not depend on market shares... I read about a lot of peope in forums who have D700 in hand and also ask opinions about the 18-200 DX lens to mount on it. Same goes for 5D2 and funny lens combinations...

The statistics show there are 3 players in the SLR market and those are the most likely to drive the mkt and develop the technology, with Sony probably trying the hardest in terms of innovation. Future trends in sales in near term will be strongly affected by logistics - production issues in Japan factories, maybe the capability to shift production off-shore.. ?

Interesting, in terms of unit sales Nikon probably never managed to repeat the success of the D40, which hit the market in November 2006.
