Suggestion for best all around lens for D7000??? - Hassiman - 03-09-2011

Hi,

I am considering a Nikon D7000 and I need suggestions for the best all around lens to use with it...

From wide to telephoto.

I want a well built lens that has really good optical quality and ... And this might seem strange... One I can manually set ti

Infinity with a focusing index

Any opinion?

How is the D7000?

There's no way you can get quality and flexibility in one lens. If there's such a thing there's no need for primes. If primes solved all problems then there's no need for zooms. But they both exist. And there's no one zoom that does it all.

Quality+range: 16-85/3.5-5.6 VR

Enjoy - it's a nice lens.

I'd vote for the AF-S 16-85VR as well.

The "cheapest" Quality Zoom you can get.

I wouldn't want to miss my prime anyway...

There was not a single camera that did not have "a lot of problems" reported when it came out or even before.

And there was not a single camera that did not have at least a few happy users.

Got a D7000 for a friend recently, shot a few hundred frames for testing - really nice small camera, definitely worthy D90 replacement. After some consideration, the walk around lens of the choice became Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS. Reason - faster by 1 stop, smoother bokeh, "almost macro" and costs 300 eur <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> Plus a 50mm 1.8 to accompany it.

Tried that underexposing thing by the way, shot at -6 stops (jpg looked black) and iso 100, then recovered from raw. Tonal range of recovered image was visibly poorer (somewhat similar to point and shoot cameras), but definitely usable.

Yeah, and take a look:

Cooool genotypewriter. Very cool.

As I said in another thread: subtle... very subtle but also very obvious. Sometimes there is a smell... a bad smell coming from your replies. Sometimes nauseating.

OMG, what is this? Linking own Google search with terms "D7000" and "problem" to answer the question what is D7000 like... You are a real Canon brand fundamentalist, indeed.

Yes, your replies stink more and more, true point.

The 16-85VR is a very nice lens.

You do not say why you want the D7000. If you have no Nikon camera or lenses yet, then instead of searching for the right lens for a specific camera, you should first find out what lenses you potentially want to have and decide on the system first. Cameras from all brands tend to converge in terms of features and price. So do lenses, but there are always small differences in line-up between Canon and Nikon, for example.

Canon's 17-55/2.8 is widely considered superior to Nikon's equivalent. Nikon has a very good 35/1.8 for DX, Canon has no such thing.

That said, the Nikon system is very good overall. Just keep in mind that you will most probably -- earlier than you might think -- want more than this one lens.

While all of you may be right, there is always the possibility to vote a certain post down in order to express your opinion about its quality.

People acting as the forum's police without offering any on-topic contribution are not better than the fanboys (or fan warlords), IMHO.

If you still insist on the questionable idea of a flame war involving certain people instead of ignoring or replying on the topic (at least the latter post by PuxaVida goes in that direction), please open a dedicated thread in the "Photozone: Just Talk" section.
