Which one has shorter recycle time? The mecablitz 58 AF-2 or the Canon 580ex II?
I would like to use the flash for wedding photography.

On paper, the Metz is a tad faster after a full power flash (5 seconds vs. 6 seconds). However, how often do you use the flash at full power during a wedding? Usually it's a lot less, and I don't think there's a significant difference in this regard between the two.
Btw: both recycle a lot faster with an external battery pack (available from both manufacturers).

My 54MZ-4 recycles noticeably faster with NiMh batteries than it does with alkalines.
It is interesting that Metz offers an external battery pack. I had to send my flash back to Metz for service a few years back. I used the crap out of it shooting weddings as well as high school football and basketball games. It was out of warranty and cost a $85 flat rate to repair no matter what the problem. I do not know what the problem was with it, but the repair center asked me if I was using an external battery pack with it. I had not, but the repair guy told me that the repair that my flash needed was very common with usage with the external battery pack due to over heating. I know that shooting football at night, my flash would get hot to the touch and emit some funky smells when using 2600 mAh NiMh batteries.

Hmm I got an idea... what if, like they put video cameras on racing cars, if you could put radio triggered flashes on the players themselves? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' /> You wouldn't need very powerful flashes because there'd be many of them so the flashes themselves could be made rather small and be attached to the protection gear!Taking it a step further, using multi-channel triggering, a lighting assistant could use flash compensation to isolate a player of interest!
