Summary: Canon patented a new IS system that does not involve mechanically moving a lens group to obtain image stabilisation. Instead, it uses [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro-optics"]electro optics[/url]. Canon says the current mechanical IS works best for hand-holding shake which is around 0.1-10Hz but this new IS method can handle shake of "several hundred" Hz because there are no moving parts.
