Leica M mount lenses (sub 1000$/EUR) - Klaus - 08-13-2010

Hi all,

I'm currently considering to try a few M-mount lenses via adapter on the Sony NEX.

Are there any "special" ones out there ? Not in terms of specs but actual performance ?

There're, of course, the various native Leicas, but these are naturally way too expensive "just to play with".

Any feedback e.g. on the following ?

Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6

Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5

Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4

Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1

Voigtlander 75mm f/2.8

Voigtlander 90mm f/3.5

Zeiss ZM 85mm f/4

Zeiss G 90mm f/2.8 (Contax G)

Zeiss G 45mm f/2 (Contax G)

Or one of the Konicas ?

Apart from the 12mm/15mm I would be interested in the quality at max. aperture in conjunction with the bokeh.

Thx!

The Contax G 45mm was blazing sharp on film, but not sure how it would perform on today's digital sensors.

Doesn't it require a special focus interface if you were to use it on a NEX? There is no focus ring on the lens itself and the AF was driven by a screw drive on the rangefinder body. Even if they were able to adapt it via a special focus mechanism, I would think the focusing experience would be mediocre at best.

I think this problem has been reasonably solved:

Klaus, I can provide Zeiss Contax G 2/45 (as well as 2,8/28, 2/35 and 2,8/90) lens for testing.

I am thinking about NEX5 just for using these lenses (2/45 and 2,8/28 are the best I ever used, and I used many)

I would also be really interested to hear your feelings about the Contax G lenses on the NEX.

I slightly wondering about the focus experience. These are AF lenses after all and the adapter focus ring needs to turn the (tiny) AF drive screw.

The 90 is dirt cheap at ebay (~240EUR) but the adapter alone costs about a hundred.

In combination that about what you pay for a new Voigtlander 90/3.5 APO.

I heard that Metabones makes a pretty good adapter with a normal focus ring instead of that little knob adapter you linked to.

I have the Voigtlaender 40/1.4 on a NEX-5 and from my pictures(no test charts) I would say it is a little bit softer at 1.4 but still very usable. The Bokeh is sometimes harsh for high contrast backgrounds but mostly it is smooth enough. I would say it is a little bit better than the Sony 50/1.4 in every respect. The 40/1.4 has also a little focus shift.

Thanks for the feedback, Marco.

I've read here and there that the bokeh is a bit of a problem with the 40/1.4. I'm also slightly concerned about the "effective" focal length (60mm f/2) which seems a little short. However, the speed is certainly fine as is the price tag. It's probably pushing sanity to consider something like the 50/1.1.
