Then there needs to be another criterion added to the reviews: what are the alternatives?

That approach would assume that there's no chance that better lenses will ever exist.
However, there's one for instance - the Nikkor 24-70/2.8. If you're desperate enough you could mount it via adapter.

Considering how this worked with the Nikkor 14-24 and G-EOS adapterI owned, you need to be fairly desparate, and never be in a hurry. That may be great for landscapes, and maybe, possibly, for studio type phootgrpahy, but it is not really workable for reportage or street photography, IMO.
And funnily enough, the 24-70L still is a very good lens when it comes to this type of fast AF type of photography.
I think a better alternative may be the use of primes, although that adds to the weight to carry, and to having to switch lenses, not to mention budget, unless one considers what the 24-70 really is and take i tfrom there: a 50 mm varifocal <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' />. In the latter case the 50L wil do great, or for those who prefer a slightly shorter FL, the 35L <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

True, true ...
But you'd have to be very desperate to mount a Nikon zoom on a Canon body ... It'd be better to just switch to Nikon completely.

Why an extra star just because there is no better alternative? It doesn't make it any better? And if a better arrives later, you'll have to change it again. Definitely a bad approach.
