Their decency level may have less of an issue with CA than a real image, perhaps, or the lens may perform differently at MTF distances than at "normal" distances for a 28mm FF lens?

Who knows. Well, if the lens is now officially "dead" anyway... then who cares.
The 28mm might not have been among their most popular lenses anyway.
