Canon just produced a one megapixel SPAD sensor thta has an outstanding low light performance 
It is not yet for photography issues, but I don't think it will be a long time before it will become available for photography use

That is from may. That is not "just".... The current news is a 3.2 megapixel SPAD sensor from Canon.
