Should I keep Canon 15-85 ? - toni-a - 10-12-2016

I bought Canon 15-85 for my istambul trip, however I can always send it back, still have till tomorrow, the lens is in perfect condition, no focus problems, sharp all over the frame however I don't wanna be a lens hoarder most important not a kit lenses hoarder

my options:

take 750D and

take 10-18 plus 24-105L

take 10-18 plus 18-55 or 17-55 plus 100 macro or 70-300

take 15-85

or take 5D plus 24-105 plus 16-28 or just 24-105

So do you think is it worth keeping this lens ?

Also:

Take the 10-18mm plus 15-85mm. Or take the 10-18mm plus 15-85mm plus 100mm macro. The options are endless.

You have a lot of overlapping lenses there! I would probably just take the 15-85, new toy and all.

the story is I bought Canon 15-85 just for this trip, however I feel it would be a waste of money since I have alternatives, do you think I should send it back ?

Tricky, I prefer the ergonomics of the 5d compared to the 760d so would probably go that way. I'm also a bit of wide junky so the 16-35 would be choice 1...however if i was wondering around all day in a strange city the lighter weight and less expensive looking 760d/10-18 would pip the 5d.

I wouldn't worry about which lens to take, you can get great photos with any, just play to the strengths of the one you take and enjoy using it. After All you're not going there to document something like you would with a wedding.

if you just want to take a standard zoom I would probably take the 15-85. The wide end is much wider than the 17-55 and its smaller and lighter too.

Of the lenses you ahve which one produce images that you like. If you like how the 15-85 render then use it and be happy. If you prefer the 24-105L then use it. If you think you will need to use the 10-18 but wont' want to take the effort to switch it then don't take it.-

We can't decide what works for you or which lenses produce the images you prefer. These are personal things. For myself there was a time when I traveled with 4 lenses exclusive (25f2.8 or 28f2.8, 35-70f4, 50f1.4 or 85f1.4,135f2.8). Today I rarely take more than 2 lenses and usually i'm more likely to grab my phone then the camera (I greatly prefer the camera; just not the bulk compare to the phone Smile). -

I never liked the 18-55 or the 15-85 (which I like better than the 18-55) but while I hated the 18-55 I never hated the 18-85. That's me. My camera was an older model and maybe the sample you have is nicer or the body you use cause it to render differently.

-

I really liked the olympus 12-60 (this is not relevant to your decision) but the body I used it with sucked - even though it produced nice images on that body. Today I'm transitioning from m4/3 to fuji but still use both (but rarely use a camera).

-

I have never used the 17-55 but i hear it is very good but a lot shorter than 15-85 (I'm more concern about the long end than the short end - as 25mm is the sweet spot for myself on the short end (35mm). I never used the 24-105 (I hear mix things). I would never use the canon 5d; just too large for my taste (i grew up with om-1 and later used a contax aria).

Toni, buy a compact camera and you'll be happy, trust me!

Agree, x100t has replaced all that for me for travelling

Hi Toni-a,

What did you decide?

I would think the 760d and the 15-85 would be sufficient for the trip. The 760D is ideal with the articulated screen, you can hold the camera in every angle, which comes in handy in narrow streets in the city.

Enjoy the trip and do not overthink your choice.

Kind regards,

Reinier

Major game changer.

my EFS 17-55 F2.8 IS is back from repairs and its focus is now spot on, it has been my preferred since almost  ten years  now, and I am very used to it.

It is out of question now I leave this lens home, so now it's easy: 10-18 plus 17-55 plus 100mm macro or 70-300 IS
