G9 II & Leica patches - Klaus - 09-12-2023 New MFT stuff from Panasonic G9 II - insanely priced IMHO: https://shop.panasonic.com/products/g9m2-mirrorless-camera-12-60mm-f2-8-4-0-lens 35-100mm f/2.8 https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-camera-lenses/lumix-g-lenses/h-es35100.html 100-400mm f/4-6.3 https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-camera-lenses/lumix-g-lenses/h-rsa100400.html RE: G9 II & Leica patches - thxbb12 - 09-12-2023 Unfortunately at this price it's definitely not competitive. Also these 2 "new" versions of existing lenses are very much meh. Exact same optical designs so no IQ improvement. Pany/OMD should release a 35-100 f2 instead. RE: G9 II & Leica patches - Klaus - 09-12-2023 The 100-400mm with 2x converter converter has a max theoretical resolution of around 5 megapixels at 800mm ... I wonder who thought that this was a good idea. They claim that these lenses have improved optics ... yet the MTFs are identical (of course). There's no way that there's no room for substantial improvements in these lenses. Panasonic talked about smaller MFT cameras in interviews - and now this? And this price? Do get that the development and production costs are basically identical to FF cameras, but I doubt consumers will accept the pricing. If you are new in the market - why would you choose the G9 II over the S5 II? They even look identical. RE: G9 II & Leica patches - goran h - 09-13-2023 Panasonic G9 vs G9 II: https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/panasonic-vs-panasonic/g9-vs-g9-ii/ RE: G9 II & Leica patches - Klaus - 09-13-2023 https://camerasize.com/compact/#887.1042,725.625,913.625,901.862,ha,t RE: G9 II & Leica patches - goran h - 09-13-2023 Not cheap, but he price is in line with other mft cameras: Pana G9 II - 22990 Swedish Crowns approx. 1925 EUR Pana GH6 - 21980 - 1840 EUR OM Syst OM-1 - 21490 - 1799 EUR I think it could be a good wildlife camera for those who don´t love heavy lenses. RE: G9 II & Leica patches - thxbb12 - 09-13-2023 Frankly, as said Klaus, I think you would be better off with a high resolution Sony A7 body (61MP) and a Sigma 100-400. Sure, it wouldn't be 800mm but cropping the result to ~20MP would probably lead to similar or even better results (better AF for sure). The package would probably be lighter and smaller, even. Even a high resolution Canon R body with the 100-500 or 100-400 (mega cheap) would make more sense IMO. To me, the strength of MFT is compactness, yet neither Pany nor OMD seem to be wanting to take advantage of this. There is one niche that hasn't been adressed by anyone so far: underwater camera. If Pany or OMD were to release something like a waterproof Pany LX100 (ala Olympus TG) or a MFT equivalent to what Nikon did with their Nikon 1W, I'm sure it would sell like hot cakes. Divers would be all over it I'm sure. And of course, a successor to the GM5 along a few well chosen true pancake lenses would make much more sense than anything else. RE: G9 II & Leica patches - goran h - 09-13-2023 Of course you can buy a Sony A7R IV for about 3300 EUR and a Sigma 100-400 (and a more powerful computer for ??EUR). That package will not be smaller and lighter. We don´t know yet how well the Pana´s af performs compared to A7R IV, but there shouldn’t be an important difference. RE: G9 II & Leica patches - Klaus - 09-13-2023 The A7R V is not a suitable base for comparison. The A7C II, S5 II, R8 and Z6 II are all in a similar price bracket. The size/weight argument is only true for very long teles. And with lenses such as the Canon 600/800mm f/11 even this is diminishing. MFT lenses are small because they are slow (on an equivalent basis). Or take an A6700/X-T5 with -say- a Tamron 150-500mm.
