I think you could try this one.
Sigma AF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM Nikon
It is available for 700€ at cameratools.nl
I have no personal experience with it, but check the tests; I had the 10-20 DC f3.5, which was excellent value.
Good luck!

Depends on what aperture you want to use... and just how wide you want it to be. If you can find a copy, go for the old Tokina 19-35mm f3.5-4.5. 2nd hand (as it is not produced anymore) it should not set you back more than 100 euros or dollars (less preferably) and it performs admirably from f8 and up.
Definitely a budget bargain.

Ouch! Feeling with you.
Is there no way it can be repaired? Replacing the front lens and servicing it apparently will set you back about 400 €, so that could be an option too.
HTH, kind regards, Wim
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....

I was thinking along the same lines. While for consumer products repairs are typically not economical, for premium lenses they often are. I think enquiring with Nikon would be worthwhile.

enjoy
Unfortunately it can not be repaired, took it to a professional repair compant and said nope.
I am looking at tokina 19-35 and believe this is the only lens I can afford at the minute and am sure it will do me until then. Thanks all for the suggestion
What's broken? Glass? Motor?

I am sorry to know it, it is so bad.
The Nikon 18-35mm f3.5-4.5 does not perform well on D3x (according to the test at PZ), but I don't know how it performs on D3s (I guess similar to on D700). I don't have experience with this lens, but I have heard good words about it from owners.
