Doubt about tihs two lenses
#1
At the end, I am going to buy a Nikon D7000. I'm doubting between this two lenses:

- Nikkor 16-85 f3,5-5,6 VR

- Sigma 17-50 f2.8 HSM OS

What do you think?. what do you think is better option?

Hi Brisco,

I have the 16-85mm with D7000 and have been very pleased with the results. As the review here points out, at 16mm the resolution is very good to excellent, from borders to centre even wide open at f/3.5 - and the corners at f/3.5 are still good at 16mm.

It's not so good in the extreme corners wide open at the long end, but the borders and centre are still very good at all apertures - and I don't think corner sharpness is as important wide open at longer focal lengths as it is at the wide end, where you might want everything sharp across the whole image.

I don't know the Sigma, but there are a couple of things which might put me off (on the other hand the f/2.8 aperture is going to be useful at times, particularly at 50mm).

You lose a small amount of field of view at the wide end, and a lot of range at the long end.

The other issue for me is reliability regarding build quality - particularly decentering. A while back Marcus and Klaus experienced a lot of issues with Sigma lenses in this respect - e.g. see here.

Many people do seem to have good experiences with Sigma - and note I have NONE! - but the doubts are too much for me, although there are guides here on testing for decentering.

Well, the question is: better for what?

The focal range and aperture is quite different with those two lenses. If you prefer to have a larger focal range, go for the Nikkor (or the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 OS HSM). If you prefer to have better potential to isolate your main subject from the background, a f/2.8 lens would of course be preferrable. But in this case you could also go for the Nikkor and combine it with a fast prime, like the AF-S DX 35/1.8 or the AF-S 50/1.8.

Looks like a classic catch, not unlike the perennial question "24-70 or 24-105?" <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Depends on what is more important: longer range or brighter aperture (the build quality apparently comes into the equation as well).

Of course, I know that the range is better the 16-85 Nikkor. But I dont like the limit of f5.6 at 85mm. The option that I was thinking was to combine the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 with the 85mm f1.8 ....

Another option (like you say) is the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-f4. What do you think about this lense?. Are there many difference in the 17-50 range between this and his big brother (17-50)?
