new SLRMagic HyperPrime 23mm f/1.7 for Sony NEX

Samyang and SLR Magic are both small companies. I think that it is not that easy to produce a reliable AF combined with decent centering quality based on small production volumes. The AF lens group must be comparatively smaller and more "loose" than a MF lens group because it must not produce a high amount of friction.

I just hope they will get over this sometime. I mean, if Tokina (the smallest third party manufacturer of the first tier) can do aperture control and AF - at least in micro motor flavour which is not stellar but acceptable - why can't Samyang. With E mount it should be even easier as Sony has released the specs (though I'm not sure now whether they released them into the public domain or just to select companies like Cosina - which makes the Voigtländers BTW - Sigma, Zeiss and Tamron).

I guess teamwork and cross-licensing is the key. Why can't they team up with some other manufacturer out there to swap the AF know-how for some optical designs. I almost wish Samyang teams up with Sigma to bring AF to the korean 35/1.4 and 24/1.4, especially the latter since I'm in a need for such a lens but won't be able to afford the Canon L equivalent for, like, several years.

Quote:I agree that an automatic aperture should be doable though. However, even Voigtlander is shy of this (see the 25mm f/0.95).

I thought the Voigtländer lenses in Canon mount have the chip for aperture control, EXIF and whatnot? (not sure since you reviewed Nikon versions using an adapter). They probably just failed to crack the MFT protocols so far. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Quote:SLR Magic is using "Tantalum" elements - this seems to be promising based on what we've seen (we are in contact with them).

Looks like the glass with exotic additives is the future, with previously unheard of performance/size ratio and wonderful quality feats. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I hope they won't be using Thorium tho. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />
