Interference me thinks. If I look into the rear of any lens, it looks equally clear over the entire area. Still if you look at the bokeh image, find many lenses, not just mirror lenses that are darker in the centre. You understand how that comes? I always assumed it was an interference effect. If it is, the lensing in front of the sensor will change it.
