There is no reason why a camera WITH K-mount could be smaller without mirror. Or, the other way around, there is no reason why a camera with mirror can't be as small as a camera without mirror, both with K-mount.
Of course, it is true that the mirror mechanism can't break, if it is not there. Mirror mechanisms are not all that breakable though, usually it is the mechanical shutter that breaks.
A downside of contrast AF is the constant use of the imaging sensor. It uses a lot of energy and the heating of the sensor has a negative impact on its (noise) performance. With time lapse projects you soon run into sensor heating issues.
