That's not exactly something a classic tracking AF couldn't do as well. The Nikons and the upcoming Canon 1Dx also feature object following. Contrast based AF for sure has hidden potentials, but so far I have the impression it still cannot match phase AF regarding tracking, even in the latest generation m43 cameras.
